Woke up early as I had slept in my car in a hidden parking lot along the Natchez Trace Parkway. I had plans to make it in to Tupelo for the morning and check out the birthplace of Elvis. My plans were also to make it in to Natchez, MS while also making it to Ocean Springs, MS for the night. Some great plans, but not enough time in the day for everything.
Before taking a detour off the trace to visit the birthplace of Elvis, I stopped to visit some old gravesites hidden in the woods along the old trace. It was a little creepy hiking back there in the early morning hours, but also peaceful.
After saying “hey” to the confederate soldiers buried along the trace, Off I went to check out Tupelo, MS and the birthplace of Elvis. I got there before it opened, so really only got to tour the grounds. That was good enough for me, especially since I was trying to make it to Ocean Springs for the evening. It was still amazing to see the whole area.
From Elvis’s birthplace, I made my way in to Tupelo to see what that was all about and to find a few more roadsideamerica.com curiosities and oddities.
After Tupelo, I wanted to see the Medgar Evers house as one of my favorite movies is Mississippi Burning, and I am probably more familiar with the efforts of Medgar Evers in racial equality. So, I drove through a semi-industrial/sketchy area to stop at the Medgar Evers Home, which is in the process of having a more National Park Service presence. It will be interesting to see how it evolves over the years. It was not open, so I took a few quick photos before getting back in my car and heading back to the trace.
I was able to make it to Ocean Springs, MS about 9pm, where I checked in to the hotel and settled in after planning to meet with my mom the next day.
